Thibault Van der Straete collects Vintage Alpaca Ponchos from villages in the Peruvian Andes to turns them into modern and beautiful pieces like rugs, sofas and ottomans.

These pieces are nowadays extremely rare and those that do exist are often 60 to 80 years old. Traditionally they have been handspun and hand-woven after ancient methods. The typical strip of each poncho has been colored with pigments from the Amazonian region. the best pieces would take six months to create. Until today, those ponchos are a symbol of the artistic expression for the Andean Community.

In the studio of Thibault Van Der Straete, the vintage material is cut and assembled anew in patchworked or striped designs, with a resulting contrast of raw and sophisticated textiles that reflect a genuine modernity while retaining the authenticity of the original materials, creating a contrast between warm and cold, ancient and modern.
